THE I, WITNESS TO HISTORY FUND

Established in 1996, the mission of I, Witness to History is to preserve, publish, and promote the stories of our elders both electronically and in print. I, Witness to History is a holistic program that recognizes the personal, cultural and social, and historical value of works written by older persons:

Personal

Participating in The I, Witness to History program promotes successful aging. The process of writing one’s story, promotes personal insight, provides an added sense of self-worth, restores a measure of self-control in one’s life, and provides much-needed social interaction. The finished product, the book, provides a sense of accomplishment and brings recognition.

Cultural and Social

By preserving the life stories of ordinary people, I, Witness to History also helps preserve today’s cultural rules and social roles for the benefit of future generations and academics.

Historical

I, Witness to History takes an interpretivist approach to history: each of us has his or her own interpretation of reality. In large numbers, such eyewitness accounts provide readers with a richer, more complex view of historical events and times past than can be found in most history books.

The I, Witness to History Fund

The I, Witness to History Fund helps underwrite a “natural laboratory” at Larksfield Place Retirement Community, Wichita, Kansas where methods and technologies are tested and refined and the I, Witness to History website is maintained. The Fund also helps provide “seed money” grants to not-for-profit organizations wishing to establish I, Witness to History programs of their own. These grants may be used: 1) to help cover the cost of I, Witness facilitators consulting and training the staff of new programs; 2) to purchase or upgrade equipment for the new program; and 3) to cover the cost of printing “the author’s copy”—the first copy of an elder’s book. In return, I, Witness to History only asks for permission to make any resulting transcripts and finished books available on its website, http://iwitnesstohistory.org, free of charge, and to use the name of the organization in its educational and fund-raising literature.
